Snowboarding in Las Vegas: How does it work?

Anyone who enjoys a bit of cold weather has surely dreamed of seeing snow. Unfortunately (or fortunately), it's not common to have snow in our country during winter. However, if you go to Las Vegas in winter, you'll have the opportunity to experience this beautiful natural phenomenon.

What's the weather like in Las Vegas?

Winter in Las Vegas, as in all cities in the United States, takes place from December 21st to March 20th.

At this time of year, there are days when the sun shines, with highs of 15ºC, however, at night, temperatures drop, the wind picks up and the city gets quite cold, with highs ranging between 0 and 5ºC, making January the coldest month of the year.

Despite the cold weather, in addition to the casinos and restaurants, you can enjoy a snowy outing in Las Vegas. And even though Las Vegas is located in the middle of the desert and snow only falls during certain weather events, know that there are places where you can find snow in this region.

For example, in the region of Mount Charleston, The snow season starts at the end of the year and lasts until April of the following year. Therefore, if you don't want to go during the peak of winter, you can wait until March and April, when you will likely still find snow.

What to do in Las Vegas during the winter?

Besides enjoying the beautiful snow-capped mountain scenery, you can take advantage of the time to practice sports. In Las Vegas, in winter, it's possible to ski. Snowboarding is also available. Both ski and snowboard lessons are offered daily for children and adults.

Where can you experience snow in Las Vegas?

There are two locations in Las Vegas, which we will see below:

Lee Canyon

In Las Vegas, there's a ski resort very close to the Strip, about 80 kilometers away, which is a half-hour drive. It's called Lee Canyon, formerly known as the Las Vegas Ski & Snowboard Resort. Besides enjoying the snow, you can also take ski and snowboard lessons there daily.

If you want to practice the sport, you can rent all the clothing, part of it, or not rent anything at all, as it's not mandatory. The only requirement is health insurance. This is because both skiing and snowboarding are extreme sports.

On the track, it's possible to take lessons for adults and children, and even with lessons, it's necessary to be very careful not to get hurt. The tip is: even if you get the hang of the sport, always go slowly to avoid any kind of fall and, consequently, getting hurt.

Mount Charleston

Now, if you don't want to practice sports and just want to experience the snow and appreciate the scenery, then you need to visit Mount Charleston. This place is 56 km from Las Vegas, about an hour away. There you can take a very relaxing walk in the snow and enjoy every detail of the landscape.

The landscape is beautiful, in winter or other seasons, and is highly recommended for people seeking outdoor activities, such as hiking. Mount Charleston is the highest mountain in the state of Nevada, at almost 4,000 meters high. The place is very beautiful because, after passing through the desert and entering the region near the mountain, it is possible to notice the change in scenery with the snow accumulated on the side of the road, with many mountains and trees, perfect for those who want to take beautiful photos.

Precautions when walking in the snow

When hiking in the snow, remember: it's very cold, so don't forget to bring warm clothes and accessories to make the most of your visit. Opt for hats, thick coats, scarves, snow boots, gloves, and if you want, you can rent special goggles. And another very important thing: don't forget to use lip balm, as the cold can cause your lips to crack.

What are the best times to enjoy the snow?

As already mentioned, if you just want to enjoy the snow, the best place to go is Mount Charleston.

The main tip is to go earlier, because in winter the sun sets earlier. Around 4 pm, the sun starts to go down, and after it sets it gets very cold in that region. Therefore, if you leave Las Vegas around 8 am, you can really appreciate the scenery, stop on the road, take beautiful photos, and enjoy the day in the snow. And even if you don't plan on skiing, it's still worth checking out the Lee Canyon slopes.
